Montclair, NJ - With a season-opening victory under its belt, Montclair State heads back out on the road for its New Jersey Athletic Conference opener. MSU travels to Maryland to face 16th-ranked and defending NJAC champion Salisbury University in Noon kickoff at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Red Hawks were winners at FDU-Florham last week holding the host Devils to 27 yards of offense and zero points in a 25-15 victory. Running back
JOHN DISTEFANO had an outstanding day amassing 305 all-purpose yards and scoring three touchdowns. DiStefano rushed for 184 yards, pulled in a 70-yard touchdown pass and recorded 51 yards on two kickoff returns. His 74-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put MSU in the lead. Meanwhile the defense racked up five sacks - two apiece by linebacker
NICK CATALANO and lineman
JOE FALATO.
Salisbury had the week off after a 34-18 win over Albright College at the newly resigned Sea Gull Stadium on September 3. Sean Rowland set the tone with a 92-yard kickoff return for a score just 12 seconds into the game. Seniors Ryan Jones and Connor Canonico paced the offense with two touchdowns apiece.
This will be the 11th meeting between the teams and the Red Hawks first trip to Salisbury since 2005 when it shocked the Top 10 Sea Gulls 31-27. After Salisbury won the first meeting in 1986 (13-7), Montclair reeled off the next eight games before the series was put on hold in 1992. They would meet again in 2005 and 2006 before renewing their rivlary as conference foes last season.
