Patchogue, NY – Coming off the excitement of getting head coach Eddie Stawinski his 100
th career win on Friday evening, the Red Hawks had plenty more on Saturday afternoon posting victories against Cortland and Old Westbury in the St. Joseph's (LI) Tournament.
The Red Hawks battled back from 2-1 down to beat Cortland for the first time in its history before cruising to a straight-set victory over Old Westbury. MSU improved to 8-2, matching the second-best start in program history (2012 & 2014).
Montclair downed Cortland for the first time in five attempts however it took a valiant comeback to do it. After winning the first set, the Red Dragons (6-5) won then next two including a 32-30 win in the Set 2. MSU won the fourth 25-21 but found themselves down 13-8 in the decisive fifth before making a miraculous comeback.
Three errors by Cortland coupled with a kill from
REBECCA MATASKER and ace by
ASHLEY GRIFFITH knotted the set at 13-13. The Red Dragons went back in front, but Matasker came through against forging a 14-14 tie. An error gave Montclair a chance to close out the match which they did as Matasker came up with a block for the final point.
Matasker finished with 12 kills and four blocks while
HAYLEY MERRILL led Montclair State with 13 kills along with 16 digs. Griffith posted 37 assists along with two aces.
MADISON MAUTE chipped in with seven kills and four blocks with libero
DANIELLE OLCESE totaling 21 digs.
The Red Hawks rolled to the three-set win against Old Westbury with a solid hitting effort. Montclair hit .544 committing just five errors in the 25-9, 25-4, 25-7 victory.
APRIL DIANGELO led the way with 12 kills while
SCHYLER WHITE added five along with six aces.
MELISSA TERPSTRA had five kills and four digs with
KIMBERLY MATLOCK recording 17 assists.
Montclair returns to action on Tuesday, September 20 for its next NJAC contest. The Red Hawks head to Union, NJ to face Kean University at 7:00 pm.
