Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Drops Second Straight, Falls to RPI in OT, 1-0

Engineers Top Red Hawks

Troy, NY - Senior Claire Cecilio scored the only goal of the game just 1:28 into overtime to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team a victory over No. 7 Montclair State University in a non-league game at Harkness Field. The win improves RPI's record to 4-2, including 3-0 at home, while the Red Hawks have now lost two straight games to fall to 6-2.

After a scoreless regulation, which saw both teams hold momentum on their respective offensive ends, RPI sophomore Mikaela DiBello collected the ball on a re-start and began running down the right side while inside the circle. She passed to Cecilio on her left and the captain swept the ball along the turf and into the goal for the victory. The goal was her first of the season and fourth of her career. The assist for DiBello was her fourth of the year and she is now tied for the team lead in points with eight.

Montclair nearly won the game in regulation as the Red Hawks applied constant pressure for the final few minutes. MSU actually had a shot go into the goal, but it was waived off because the referee's whistle had blown. The Red Hawks had solid offensive chances to end the first half as well, but Rensselaer's Taylor Clink broke up the play from her defender position. Montclair's ensuing penalty corner was unsuccessful after the horn sounded.

The Red Hawks had a 3-1 edge in shots in the first half and a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners in the first 35 minutes.

RPI controlled much of the play in the second half, including two straight corners 15 minutes into the frame. Perhaps the best chance came 10 minutes later when DiBello broke down the right side and put a shot on KAITLIN MAGUIRE, but the junior goalkeeper stacked her pads to deny the chance.

The Engineers finished the second half with an 8-1 advantage in shots, totaling 11 for the game. Montclair had four total shots in the game, two of the stopped by sophomore Rachel Kaufman and one by defender Mac Reininger. Maguire made four saves on the other end.track on
