Volleyball Splits in Final Day at Battlefield Classic

Griffith Named to All-Tournament Team

Gettysburg, PA – After suffering their first loss of the season early in the day, the Montclair State volleyball team bounced back with a five-set win the second contest earning a split in the Battlefield Classic at Gettysburg College on Saturday.

Sophomore ASHLEY GRIFFITH was named to the All-Tournament Team as MSU finished 3-1 in the two-day tournament. The Red Hawks fell to Messiah 3-0 before coming back for a five-set win against McDaniel College.

Unbeaten Messiah (4-0) posted the straight set victory bby scored of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-19. Junior HAYLEY MERRILL recorded a team-best 12 kills along with three digs. Griffith posted 18 assists along with a pair of aces while REBECCA MATASKER had three kills and four blocks. DANIELLE OLCESE had 11 digs.

The Red Hawks would split the first four sets with McDaniel before capturing the decisive frame 15-8 using a solid hitting display. Montclair went 11-of-17 in the set. Merrill topped MSU with 18 kills with COURTNEY MATLOCK adding 11. Merrill completed a double-double with 14 digs. NATALIA MAJKUT registered nine kills and six blocks with MADISON MAUTE netting six kills and four blocks.

Olcese accumulated 24 digs while Griffith went for 52 assists, two aces and seven digs. Freshman CAITLIN AARTS had seven digs.

Montclair State is now off until Saturday, September 10 when it is home for the first time in 2016. MSU hosts Farmingdale State and Mount Aloysius at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 11:00 am.
