JOVANNI CHATHAM scored five points while backcourt mate
VINCE ANFIELD buried a key three-pointer as Montclair State posted its third straight victory, topping Rutgers-Camden, 58-54 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.
Anfield finished with 13 points while Chatham had 10 off the bench helping the Red Hawks improve to 8-6 on the season, 5-2 in the NJAC as they defeated the Scarlet Raptors for the eighth consecutive meeting. MSU leads the all-time series 51-9.
Sophomore forward Isaac Destin and guard Elijah Robles had 14 and 13 points respectively for Rutgers-Camden (2-10, 1-7 NJAC), which had its two game-win streak halted. The Raptors were coming off a 68-67 win over No. 17 Neumann University on Monday.
After taking a nine-point lead early in the first half, the Red Hawks found themselves down 27-26 at halftime and fell behind further after Julian Martin scored on a layup with 10:30 left for a 44-36 advantage.
MSU tallied the next six points to trim the deficit to 46-44 on a Chatham layup with nine minutes showing. Chatham would tie the game at 47-47 and a foul shot from
BRANDON CHANNER put Montclair State up 48-47 with 3:18 to go. That lead was short-lived as Robles connected from behind the arc 30 seconds later putting the Raptors back on top 50-48.
Chatham regained the lead for Montclair with a three-point play with Anfield hitting from long range with 1:19 left making the score 54-51. Martin got a free throw back for Rutgers-Camden however that was answered with free throws by Chatham and
JORDAN ROBERSON extending the lead to 56-51 with 21 seconds. Channer hit from the line with 12 seconds but a Marcus Taylor three made it a one-possession game, 57-53 with three seconds. Chatham iced the game for Montclair making 1-of-2 attempts at the line.
Channer had 11 points and six rebounds for MSU, which got seven points and five rebounds from Roberson.
DANIEL RAMIS chipped in with six points for the Red Hawks, who outrebounded the Raptors 49-36, including 17 on the offensive glass.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, January 14 when it heads to Ewing, NJ for a 3:00 pm NJAC contest with The College of New Jersey.
