Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams got their new season off to a great start as the Red Hawks swept their opener against Drew at the Panzer Pool on Friday evening.
COURTNEY MUNRO,
CLAIRE LUIGARD and
CHARLES COBBERTT each won two individual events as the MSU men knocked off the Rangers 146-86 while the women registered a 150-87 victory.
The Red Hawks took first place in 19 of the events contested starting with a sweep of the 200 medley relay as the men recorded a winning time of 1:39.45 while the women clocked in at 1:53.76 to take first in the evening.
Munro added her first win in the 1000 freestyle posting a time of 11:24.47 before coming back later to claim the 500 free in a time of 5:29.97.
KEVIN GIBSON was a winner in the 200 free (1:48.55) while
MADISON FRANKE and
CHRISTINA CUSMANO went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with times of 25.65 and 25.90 respectively.
Cobbertt won the men's side of the 50 free (22.19) with Luigard (2:19.95) and
ERIN CANNON (2:21.61) taking the top two spots in the 200 individual medley.
MARGAUX WINCHOCK was a winner in the 100 fly (1:01.17) with
STEVEN ROTH finishing first in the same event (52.61).
GENNA BREWER was victorious in the 100 freestyle (54.61) and Montclair went 1-2 in the 100 back with
EMILY ROTHAMEL winning the event in a time of 1:01.68 touching out Cannon who swam 1:01.90.
Cobbertt made it a sweep of the freestyle taking first in the 100 at 48.96 seconds. Luigard's second win came in the 100 breaststoke (1:13.05)
GRACE NIELSEN was second in both diving events with scores of 168.22 points and 206.33 points.
MICHAEL TRAINA did the same scoring 119.70 points in optional portion and 149.33 in the required section.
No rest for the Red Hawks, who jump back into action on Saturday, October 21 at 3:00 pm stepping up its level of competition. Montclair will head to South Orange, NJ for a tri-meet at Seton Hall University where it will face the host Pirates along with Monmouth University.
