Frostburg, MD – Frostburg State, ranked 16
th in Division III, scored 24 points in the first quarter and rolled to a 62-3 victory over Montclair State at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback Connor Cox threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns as the Bobcats improved to 6-1 overall, 5-1 in NJAC as they remained a game behind co-leaders Wesley and Salisbury.
HUNTER DALY connected on his seventh field goal of the season for MSU, which had dropped two straight. The Red Hawks are now 3-4 overall, 3-3 in the NJAC.
Montclair State got the opening kickoff and moved 56-yards in six plays.
JOHN APICELLA hit
BRIAN KOWALCZYK for 38 yards on the first play and
ANTHONY TRAVISANO scampered 14 yards on the next play down to the FSU 25. Three plays later, the Red Hawks faced a 4
th-and-1 at the 16 and went for the gamble. The move backfired as Anthony Taylor and Niles Scott stuffed Travisano ending the drive.
The big play sparked the Bobcats, who needed four plays to put points on the board. Cox hit Malik Morris on a 72-yard touchdown toss giving Frostburg a 7-0 lead with 9:40 remaining. Frostburg added to the lead on their next possession marching 93 yards in six plays. The Cox-to-Morris connection hit again this time for 46 yards as he Bobcasts went up 14-0.
Things would get worse for the Red Hawks as Frostburg executed an on-side kick recovering the ball at the MSU 26. Four plays after the recovery, Hassan Mostafa booted a 26-yard field goal for a 17-0 advantage. The hosts then came up with a huge play on special teams for its next score as Jake Broschart blocked a punt and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown with 72 seconds left in the opening quarter.
The Red Hawks would get on the board with 3:55 left in the first half as Daly hit from 29 yards out.
Apicella threw for 141 yards while Travisano recorded 50 yards on the ground.
TAJ HUGGINS, who caught a career-best 10 passes last week, had four receptions for 59 yards. Linebacker
NICK CATALANO had 12 tackles while
MAURO ALTAMURA posted eight.
DYLAN ELLIOTT intercepted a pass with
NICK VOLPE and
JAKE WEBER each registering a sack.
The Red Hawks are back home at Sprague Field next Saturday, October 28 facing another tough test. Montclair hosts No. 14 Wesley College with kickoff set for 1:00 pm.
