No. 10 Field Hockey Beats No. 3 Babson, 2-1

Red Hawks Complete Regular Season with Fourth Straight Win

Montclair, NJ – Juniors AMBER HASLETT and KAILEY DALGAUER each scored during the first half as No. 10 Montclair State edged No. 3 Babson College 2-1 in a matchup of Top 25 teams at Sprague Field on Saturday morning.

Haslett and sophomore KELLY WATSON had one assist apiece as the Red Hawks (15-2) won their fourth straight capping off a whirlwind 18 hours of action. Montclair defeated Ramapo on Friday evening 3-0 and returned 14 hours later for a 9:30 am start against the Beavers (16-3), who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Babson grabbed a 1-0 lead 3:43 into the contest as Tori Roche collected her 13th tally of the season. Ashley Tango ripped a ball from 25 yards out toward the goal that Roche was able to tip in for the early one-goal lead.

Montclair State matched that three minutes later converting a penalty corner chance. Watson inserted the ball to Haslett on the wing with the latter blasting as shot inside the near post knotting the game at 1-1 less than seven minutes into the contest.

The Red Hawks took the lead at the 13:43 mark with another penalty corner conversion. This time it was Dalgauer, who took a cross-circle pass from Haslett, and ripped it through the legs of keeper Diedre Barry for her eighth goal of the season and second in as many days.

From that point on it would be left to the defenses and goalkeepers as both sides came up with big plays. Montclair's KAITLIN MAGUIRE came up with two saves immediately after the go-ahead goal denying Catherine Gillman first and then a follow-up from Tango. Maguire added another save with 3:42 left blocking Jacki Merrigan's attempt and Barry stopped VICTORIA ROSSI inside two minutes as Montclair led 2-1 at the break.

Defense remained the story in the second half with a 10 shots total. Montclair held the edge in the category in the final 35 minutes, 6-4 including two early on that were knocked away by Barry.
The Beavers turned up the pressure in the MSU end of the field in the last 10 minutes however the extended possession couldn't yield a tying score. The best chance Babson got came with 5:38 left as Roche drove in toward the right post. But Maguire made a sliding save to keep the Red Hawks in front.

Montclair State was then able to flip the field for the final here minutes and used a pair of penalty corners to effectively run out the clock.

Maguire finished seven saves while Barry collected four. Each team had 13 shots and nine penalty corners in the game.

The Red Hawks now turn their attention to the NJAC Field Hockey Championship which begins on Wednesday, November 1. Montclair will be the No. 4 seed and head to top-seeded Kean University for a 7:30 pm matchup with the eighth-ranked Cougars (17-1). MSU handed Kean its first loss, 3-2 in overtime on October 17.
