Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball teams served up 26 aces, one shy of the single-match record, as the Red Hawks knocked off John Jay College in four sets at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks won their second straight match and third in the last four as it improved to 10-8 on the season. Jilliam Wilson and
NATALIA MAJKUT recorded eight and seven kills respectively while
SCHYLER WHITE added five along with four aces.
Montclair fell one short of its top mark for aces set back in 2006 against Centenary College. The Red Hawks had 11 in the first set as it breezed to a 25-9 victory. They would go up 2-0 with a 25-10 win in the second however the Bloodhounds (7-7) took the third, 25-19. MSU closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set for its 10
th win against John Jay in as many all-time meetings.
White had four in the first five points of the match as the Red Hawks took a 10-1 lead after
LILY SCANZILLO put up an ace. MSU led 14-4 before going on a seven-point run. Five of those points came on aces with
SIYARA HERBERT getting two and
DANIELLE MURRAY three for a 21-4 advantage.
Two aces by
ASHLEY GRIFFITH in the second set boosted Montclair to a 5-0 lead. Scanzillo served nine straight points, including two aces in 10-0 run that gave the Red Hawks a 16-3 lead. A five-point run got the score to 23-8 before the Red Hawks finished off the second with a kill from
CAITLIN LANGE, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-10 triumph.
After John Jay took the third set, the teams went back-and-forth in the fourth before the Red Hawks methodically pulled away. Trailing 13-12, Griffith had a kill to tie sparking a five-point run that turned into a 16-13 advantage after Scanzillo registered an ace. The Bloodhounds crept back within 16-15 but two aces from DiAngelo in a four-point spurt helped push the lead back to 20-15.
The Red Hawks finished off the match with the final five points, Herbert served four of those with Wilson netting back-to-back kills, the last coming on match point.
D'Angelo led all MSU players with five aces while Scanzillo, White and Herbert each had four. Griffith totaled 23 assists with Scanzillo totaling 17 digs.
Montclair State is back in action on Tuesday, October 10 when it hosts Ramapo College at 7:00 pm. It will be a rematch of last year's NJAC Championship Game won by the Red Hawks in four sets.
