Newport News, VA – The Montclair State field hockey team saw its 2017 season come to as end as the Red Hawks fell to Franklin & Marshall 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at Christopher Newport University.
Sophomore
KELLY WATSON scored the lone goal for MSU, which finished its season at 16-4. The Red Hawks were making their second straight and seventh overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Montclair had received a first-round bye.
The Red Hawks put the first goal on the board at the 14:36 mark of the opening half. Watson collected her fifth goal of the season tipping in a shot by
HANNAH BOLLINGER at the left post.
Montclair State would hold that one-goal lead for the next 10 minutes. Goalkeeper
KAITLIN MAGUIRE made one save stopping Katie O'Loughlin at 23:21. The Diplomats (17-4) however tied the game two minutes later as Erin Coverdale netted her 16
th goal of the year on a shot from the middle of the circle.
Franklin and Marshall then clamped down on the Red Hawks' offense in the second half outshooting Montclair 6-0. Maguire made two saves in the first five minutes keeping the contest at 1-1. The Diplomats would take the lead converting off a flurry of action with 10 minutes to play.
Off the penalty corner, Coverdale put forth a shot that was stopped at the backline by
MARISSA SICONOLFI. Maguire followed up with a save against Coverdale, who managed to slip the rebound over to Nicole Bodo for the go-ahead goal with 9:58 remaining.
It would be the last shot in the game.
Maguire had five saves for Montclair State.
