Red Hawks Top Frostburg State for Tubbs Jones Tournament Championship

Cleveland, OH – Senior forward JARRETT BOGUS, named the Most Valuable Player, posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as Montclair State captured the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament at Case Western Reserve with an 84-82 win over Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman guard MYLES MITCHELL-WHITE added 13 points, three rebounds and three assists as the Red Hawks are off to a 2-0 start for the second time in three seasons. KAAN YILMAZ chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds

MSU built an early five-point lead but saw that disappear quickly as the opening half became a back-and-forth contest until the final six minutes. JUSTIN PORTER gave the Red Hawks a 29-28 lead with a layup and then tied the game at 32-32 with 4:49 left after draining a three-pointer. Two more ties would take place before the Bobcats (1-1) ended the half with eight of the final 12 points and took a 44-40 lead into the break.

Frostburg State held on to that lead and got up by six at 54-48 on a three-pointer by Lawrence Pettis with 15:22 remaining. The Red Hawks countered with a 13-5 run over the next four minutes to take the lead. JOSEPH RADI finished off the spurt with a three that put MSU in front 61-59.

Michael Tyler regained the lead for the Bobcats, hitting a jumper with 7:41 to go for a 68-65 advantage. JORDAN ROBERSON, named to the All-Tournament Team, cut the deficit to a point and Yilmaz vaulted Montclair into the lead on a layup less than a minute later. Yilmaz would add two free throws for a 71-68 advantage with six minutes left.

Frostburg State made one last charge and took the lead with 54 seconds left as Dalton Gaus hit from behind the arc putting the Bobcats up 82-81. Senior guard DANIEL RAMIS came up big at the foul line the next trip down the floor making both for an 83-82 MSU lead with 42 seconds.

The Bobcats missed a chance to take the lead with 21 seconds remaining however Montclair couldn't capitalize missing twice at the line. Trailing by one, Frostburg State got one last chance however Pettis' layup with three ticks fell short. Bogus got the rebound and was fouled with one second remaining. He hit 1-of-2 at the line for the final margin.

Roberson added 12 points and eight rebounds for Montclair which got 10 points from Porter. Radi had nine points in a reserve role as MSU got 33 points from its bench.
