Women's Basketball Surges Past Stevens, 65-56

Red Hawks Find Shooting Touch in Second Half

Hoboken, NJ – Senior forwards KATIE SIRE and TAYLOR HARMON each posted double-doubles while senior guard KATE TOBIE added 14 points and eight assists as Montclair State flipped the script in the second half against Stevens in a 65-56 victory on Monday evening.

Sire finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds with Harmon collecting 16 points and 10 boards as the Red Hawks (4-1) outscored the Ducks (1-4) 47-30 in the final 20 minutes to turn an eight-point halftime deficit into a seven-point victory.

MSU struggled from the field in the first half shooting 6-of-29 from the field, including a 2-for-12 first quarter and found itself down 14-7 after the first 10 minutes. The Red Hawks would cut that deficit down to four points twice, the last coming at 19-15 with 6:07 left after Harmon sank two foul shots. But Stevens managed to maintain that lead and scored seven of the final 10 points for a 26-18 advantage at the break.

But everything would change in the third quarter as Montclair found its shooting touch going 12-of-19 from the field and outscoring Stevens 24-15. Trailing 28-20, MSU scored eight in a row and tied the game as Tobie finished off a break with a layup with 6:47 left. The Ducks went back on top 35-30 a minute later however MSU went on an 8-1 run and took its first lead on a Sire layup 38-36 with 2:40 to play.

Maddi Hahn drained a three-point with 1:57 left pushing Stevens back in front but a Sire layup and Tobie jumper in the closing minute vaulted Montclair to a 42-41 lead heading into the fourth.

The Red Hawks' solid second-half shooting performance continued in the fourth as they opened the final period with a 13-2 run. Freshman TAYLOR BROWN started it off with a three-pointer and Harmon's fast-break layup made the score 49-43. Tobie added a layup before Harmon's jumper with 6:53 left gave Montclair a 53-43 advantage.

MSU would get up by as many as 13 points with Stevens only getting as close as the final nine-point margin.

Sire added three assists and three steals for MSU, which got six points in a reserve role from Brown.

Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, November 29 on the road in Mahwah at Ramapo College with tipoff at the Bradley Center scheduled for 5:30 pm.
