Cucci Crushes Two Homers as Softball Sweeps Centenary

Gehring Goes Deep as Red Hawks Post Shutout Victories

Montclair, NJ – Freshman VALENTINA CUCCI homered in each game of the doubleheader while sophomore VICTORIA GEHRING also belted a round-tripper as Montclair State swept past Centenary University at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday.

Pitchers SAM KEATING, COURTNEY POLITZ and NICOLE MAJEWSKI combined on a pair of shutouts as the Red Hawks (7-5) posted wins of 7-0 and 8-0. The games were the first for Montclair since its Florida trip finale on March 10.

In the opener, Montclair State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. NOEL HODGINS singled with one out, stole second and came home as ELENA RADESICH doubled to left field. Radesich scored on the next play as Cucci flared a base hit into right center.

Montclair added another run in the second as Gehring ripped a shot down the left field line that ducked just inside the foul pole for her first homer of the year and a 3-0 Red Hawk advantage. Cucci added to the lead in the fifth with a towering two-run homer over the left field fence. KAYLEE POWERS and BLAKE SAPERSTEIN each had RBI singles in the sixth inning to account for the final two runs.

Keating got the win tossing six shutout innings. Keating (2-2) allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one. Politz closed out the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Hodgins, Cucci and Gehring had two hits apiece for Montclair State.

Cucci would give the Red Hawks a lead in the second with her second home run of the day, a line drive shot down the left field line. ALEX ZULLA drove in a run with a base hit and a botched rundown by the Cyclones (2-10) allowed LAUREN BOOTH to score. Powers ripped a run-scoring double making the score 4-0.

Saprerstein scampered home on a wild pitch in the third inning and Montclair plated three more runs in the fourth. Powers, who had two hits in the game, doubled in her second run with Gehring lofting a sacrifice fly to score Powers. Hodgins raced home on a wild pitch for the 8-0 lead.

Politz (2-2) got the win hurling four hitless innings, striking out four and walking two. Majewski finished up with a scoreless seventh.

Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, March 25 with another home doubleheader. MSU hosts New York University at 1:00 pm.
