Softball Takes Two Tough Losses at Rebel Spring Games

Red Hawks Fall to Bluffton, Penn State Altoona

Kissimmee, FL – The Montclair State softball team suffered a pair of tough losses on Monday as the Red Hawks fell to Bluffton University 5-4 and Penn State Altoona, 1-0 in eight innings at the Rebel Spring Games. MSU fell to 2-2 on their 10-game Florida trip.

In the first game against Bluffton, the Red Hawks built a 4-0 lead. ELENA RADESICH drew a walk with the bases loaded in the first innings and scored again in the fourth on an error for a 2-0 lead. ALEX ZULLA plated the third run with an RBI single in the fourth and an RBI single by ALANA LUNA in the seventh extended the lead to four runs.

However Bluffton, which was held to three hits in the first six innings, came alive in the bottom of the seventh with three straight hits that produced its first run.  The lead was trimmed to 4-2 on a ground out and a two-out error by the Red Hawks brought Bluffton within a run.  Cailyn Morstadt tied the game with an RBI single and Josie McElroy belted a double to score the winning run.

COURTNEY POLITZ (0-1) took the loss in relief for Montclair. NICOLE MAJEWSKI recorded the first 18 outs (6.0 IP) allowing six hits and three runs (2 earned) with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. Zulla and BLAKE SAPERSTEIN had two hits apiece for MSU.

The Penn State Altoona game turned out to be a pitcher's duel between the Lions Kate Burge and Montclair's SAM KEATING. The two matched goose-eggs on the board until the eighth inning when PSU pushed across the lone run in the game. Lauren O'Donnell tripled home Jenna Myers, who began the inning at second in the international tie-breaker rule.

The Red Hawks had a chance to tie in the bottom of the eighth. Zulla singled with one out moving LAUREN BOOTH to third. Saperstein then lined a ball to center that was caught with the Lions turning a double play to end the game.

Keating (0-1) scattered nine hits and struck out seven in the game. Saperstein finished with two hits for MSU.

Montclair is back in action on Wednesday, March 8 facing Rhodes College and Penn State Berks at 9:00 and 11:15 am, respectively.
