Softball Shut Outs CSI Twice; Sweeps Dolphins 2-0 & 1-0

Ruiz, Keating Combine for 14 Scoreless Innings

Staten Island, NY – Freshman righthander KIARA RUIZ and junior righty SAM KEATING fired 14 innings of shutout softball as Montclair State swept College of Staten Island 2-0 and 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Junior catcher ALANA LUNA had an RBI in each game, including a solo home run in the nightcap as the Red Hawks to 19-13 on the year. The Dolphins, who had their 19-game winning streak snapped, fell to 23-5 on the year.

Ruiz got her first start of the season and made the most of the opportunity limiting CSI to just four hits. Ruiz (1-0) allowed four singles, struck out two, walked one and did not allow a batter to reach third base in picking up her first collegiate victory. Jacqueline Cautela took the loss, her first of the year (11-1).

Scoreless through the first three innings, Montclair broke the tie in the fourth. VICTORIA GEHRING singled with one out and stole seconds. After a pop up for the second out, Luna doubled to right center for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

The Red Hawks added to the lead in the seventh with a big insurance run.  KAYLEE POWERS did it by herself as she scorched a towering fly ball to centerfield that just bounced off of the top of CSI's Kristy Colangelo's.   While Powers entered second base, CSI could not corral the ball and Powers kept motoring and went all the way home, beating a play at the plate to take a 2-0 lead.

Ruiz allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but retired the next three hitters to preserve her first career shutout.

Keating put up more zeroes for MSU in the second game which were necessary as she went inning for inning against the Dolphins' Nicolette Trapani. Keating would win out with her third shutout of the season while also improving to 7-4. Keating gave up four hits, struck out and walked one. Trapani (8-3) gave up five hits and one run, fanning three and walking one.

One of those five hits was the difference maker and it came in the top of the sixth as Luna led off the inning with solo homer over the left field fence.

That turned out to be enough for Keating, who wiggled out of trouble in the seventh after the Dolphins put runners at first and second with one out. But the righthander struck out the next batter and got a force out at second to end the game.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 22 hosting Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
