Men's Lacrosse Bows Out of NCAA Tournament Against St. Lawrence

Haemmerle Scores Four in Loss to Second-Round Loss to Saints

Canton, NY – Sophomore MATT HAEMMERLE scored four goals however fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University used strong starts in each half to knock off Montclair State 19-6 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship at North Country Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Conor Healey had two goals and three assists for the Saints (16-2), who advance to the third round on Saturday, May 13 against Cortland.

Senior BRADY WULSTER had a goal and assist for Montclair, which closed out its season at 11-8. The Red Hawks were making their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

St. Lawrence jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 2:46 of the contest. Jamie Kuppel scored from the left wing with 13:03 left in the first period and Steven Peterson's goal a minute later put the Saints up two. Haemmerle got MSU on the board with 11 minutes to play however host SLU scored the final three goals for a 5-1 lead at the end of one period.

The Saints extended their run to five goals with two to open the second period widening the lead to 7-1. Haemmerle's man-up goal near the midpoint of the period stopped the run but Saint Lawrence answered with a goal by Austin Nadeau with 5:51 to go.

Haemmele and Wulster scored two of the next three goals in the game to make the score 9-4 and Haemmerle's fourth with 27 seconds left trimmed the deficit to four. But Peterson scored with seven ticks before halftime as SLU took a 10-5 lead into the break.

Healey began the second with a goal for the Saints which was matched by Alex Han, who finished off a feed from JAMES CLARKE with 9:25 remaining for an 11-6 SLU advantage. But that would be the last goal for MSU, which registered the last eight goals of the contest.

DON FINN had two assists for Montclair State. RYAN ANZALONE forced three turnovers while senior defenseman RYAN YOUNG had eight ground balls. Senior BLASE MANTINEO was 15-of-29 on faceoffs for the Red Hawks with eight ground balls. LUCAS JONES had six saves for MSU with JACK CARDEW stopping three shots in the second half.
