Montclair, NJ - Montclair State will get back-to-back home games as Kean University comes to Sprague Field on Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup.
Turnovers and missed opportunities were costly for Montclair State as the Red Hawks fell to Christopher Newport in its home opener 16-8 last Saturday. Montclair committed six turnovers and was flagged for 120 yards in penalties. Still MSU was in the game and trailed 16-0 late when
JOHN APICELLA connected with
KASON CAMPBELL on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 2:51 to play in the game. The Red Hawks made the 2-point conversion cutting the lead back to one score. Montclair got the ball back however the last of the six turnovers sealed the contest for the Captains. Linebacker
MAURO ALTAMURA led the way with 12 tackles while Vin Cordasco and
NICK CATALANO had 10 apiece.
NICK VOLPE had aseven tackles, 3.5 for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
The Cougars picked up their first victory of the season in a 28-14 win at Southern Virginia last week. Kean jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter that included a blocked punt for a touchdown. Quarterback Charles App was 22-of-29 for 218 yards and one rushing touchdown. Brian Matthews rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns on the day. Defensively Darin Hungerford led all players with 14 tackles, including two for a loss.
This will be the 43rd meeting between the Red Hawks and Cougars with Montclair State capturing 33 of the previous 42 games. Kean has won the last two contests, including a 28-21 win at MSU in 2015 and a 21-10 victory at Alumni Stadium in Union in 2016.
