New Paltz, NY – The Montclair State volleyball team split its first two matches at the Hawks Invitational held at SUNY New Paltz on Friday. The Red Hawks (2-2) past Southern Vermont in three sets before falling to host New Paltz in four.
Freshman
SIYARA HERBERT collected 10 kills in the victory over Southern Vermont as MSU posted a 25-17, 25-13, 25-11 victory. Herbert hit .474 or the match committing just one hitting error in 19 attempts. Sophomores
JILLIAN WILSON and
CAITLIN LANGE each had seven kills. Junior setter
ASHLEY GRIFFITH total 21 assists along with two aces with freshman
MEGAN O'ROURKE collecting 14 assists off the bench.
Libero
LILY SCANZILLO led Montclair with 17 digs with Herbert and freshman
ALEXANDRA CAMPOS each notching seven digs.
Against the host Hawks, MSU dropped the first two sets 25-9 and 25-22 before coming back to take the third by the identical 25-22 score. In the fourth set, Montclair had two chances to force a fifth set however New Paltz was able to stave off each set point scoring the last three for a 27-25 triumph and a 3-1 victory.
SCHYLER WHITE recorded 12 kills with
NATALIA MAJKUT and Herbert getting nine apiece. Griffth added 33 assists, two aces and six digs while Lange recorded four kills and five blocks. Scanzillo led all players with 27 digs.
Montclair State continues action in the Hawks Invitational on Saturday, September 9 with two matches. The Red Hawks face Sage at 11:00 am before taking on Mount St. Mary (NY) at 1:00 pm.
