Camden, NJ – The Montclair State men's basketball team's longest winning streak in six seasons came to an end as the Red Hawks were stunned by Rutgers-Camden, 72-71 on Wednesday evening.
Raptor guard Vince Anfield hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:46 remaining as the Scarlet Raptors snapped a nine-game losing streak to MSU beating Montclair State for the first time since December 15, 2012 in a 69-59 victory at home. Anfield finished with a game-high 31 points, including 7-of-8 from behind the arc for Rutgers-Camden (3-11, 1-7 NJAC).
Senior guard
JOVANNI CHATHAM posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Hawks (11-4, 5-3 NJAC), who had their six-game winning streak halted as MSU fell for the first time since an 84-82 overtime loss at William Paterson on December 6.
Montclair led 34-30 at the break and increased that lead to 10 points after
DANIEL RAMIS drained a three-pointer with 17:58 left making the score 42-32. The Raptors chipped away at the lead and took a 46-45 advantage with 12:06 to play.
EDDIE EMEDOH answered for the Red Hawks a minute later putting Montclair State back into the lead and the Red Hawks held on to that advantage until Anfield hit a three with 4:06 left for a 63-62 Rutgers-Camden lead.
Ramis' three-pointer with 3:25 to go gave MSU a 68-67 lead and two free throws by
JUSTIN PORTER made it a three-point advantage. Marcus Taylor connected on a jumper cutting the deficit to 70-69 with 2:28 left before Anfield hit the go-ahead three. The Red Hawks would get a chance to tie with 51 seconds however Chatham hit just 1-of-2 from the line leaving Montclair on the wrong side of a 72-71 score.
A miss by Rutgers-Camden gave Montclair State one last chance however the Red Hawks would fail to connect on two three-point attempts in the closing seconds.
Ramis finished with 15 points while
JORDAN ROBERSON added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
JARRETT BOGUS had nine points with Porter adding five points, six rebounds and three assists. Emedoh and
DREW WALKER scored six points apiece.
Montclair State will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, January 13 when it hosts The College of New Jersey at the Panzer Athletic Center. Tipoff of the NJAC contest is set for 1:00 pm.
