Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams celebrated Senior Day in grand style with each of its four seniors collecting a first-place finish in the Red Hawks sweep of William Paterson at the Panzer Pool on Saturday.
ERIN CANNON,
STEVEN ROTH,
BRENDAN TURNER and
MICHAEL PACHECO each played a role in the victories as the Montclair women topped the Pioneers 156-96 to finish its dual meet season at 8-2 overall, 4-1 in the NJAC. Meanwhile the men are now 6-3 (2-2 NJAC) after its 174-116 triumph.
MSU won 18 events in the combined meet including the first one of the day – 200 medley relay. The women's team of
CHRISTINA CUSMANO, Cannon,
MARGAUX WINCHOCK and
DANI ZIMMERMAN combined on a time of 1:58.05 while the men's squad of
JAMES SINGEWALD,
KEVIN CLAUSS, Roth and
CHARLES COBBERTT swam 1:40.26 in their first-place showing.
Cannon picked up the first of her two victories on the day taking the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.37. She then took top honors in the 200 breaststroke recording a time of 2:43.02. Pacheco led a 1-2 finish for the Red Hawks win the 200 freestyle posting a time of 1:48.58 with
PATRIK JAGIELSKI coming in at 1:51.29. Roth was a double-winner with victories in both butterfly events. He won the 100 in a time of 52.53 seconds and registered a time of 1:58.45 in the 200. Turner got his win in the final event of the day swimming the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay.
KEVIN GIBSON,
KEVIN HENNINGSEN, Turner and Cobbertt capped off the meet for Montclair with a time of 3:16.49.
EMILY ROTHAMEL won the 1000 freestyle (11:51.19) while Gibson led a 1-2-3 finish in the same event with a time of 10:20.22.
CLAIRE LUIGARD swam 2:04.31 to win the 200 freestyle with Cusmano taking the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.44.
DANIEL BORJAS had a time of 1:02.12 to win the 100 breastroke and Luigard collected a second win in the 200 butterfly (2:18.97).
MADISON FRANKE (25.46) and
MICK VAN OOSTEN (23.10) each took first in the 50 freestyle. Cusmano (56.74) and Rothamel (2:13.92) recorded a second first-place finish in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke, respectively.
GRACE NIELSEN won the first section of the 1-meter diving event with a score of 178.65 points before posting a score of 219.22 in the second section.
MICHAEL TRAINA was second on the men's side with individual scores of 118.27 and 172.87 points respectively.
The Montclair State men finish off their season schedule on Wednesday, January 31 hosting Vassar College at the Panzer Pool beginning at 6:00 pm. Both teams then begin preparations for the Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships which will be held February 16-18 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
