Men's Basketball Upends No. 20 NJCU, 76-66

Mitchell-White Leads Red Hawks Past Gothic Knights

Jersey City, NJ – Freshman guard MYLES MITCHELL-WHITE, scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as Montclair State upset No. 20 New Jersey City University 76-66 at the John J. Moore Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Junior JORDAN ROBERSON finished with 12 points with JARRETT BOGUS adding 10 as the Red Hawks (10-3, 4-2 NJAC) posted their fifth straight victory and registered its first win against the Gothic Knights (10-2, 4-1 NJAC) in Jersey City since February 4, 2009, a 71-60 triumph. Montclair State also chalked up its first win against a ranked opponent since a 70-69 win over No. 23 Stockton in January 2014.

MSU, which now leads the all-time series 94-75, also handed NJCU its first home regular-season loss since a 76-74 setback against TCNJ on January 9, 2016.

The teams traded baskets and the lead back and forth through the first 26 minutes of the first half until a late surge by MSU gave the Red Hawks a five-point lead at the break. Roberson hit two from the foul line with 3:17 left giving Montclair the lead and then finished off a break 30 seconds later making the score 34-31. DEAIREUS BROWN drove the lane for a layup and JUSTIN PORTER drilled a three-pointer with 1:17 left as the Red Hawks took a 39-34 advantage into the locker room.

NJCU opened the second half with a 9-0 spurt to take back the lead and jumper by Shaquan Worthy put the hosts up 47-42 with 16:15 left. MSU countered with a 13-point run, eight by Mitchell-White, the NJAC Rookie of the Week. His layup followed by two fouls shots by Bogus pulled MSU within 47-46 with KAAN YILMAZ drilling a three-pointer for the go-ahead score. Mitchell-White added the last six, including a three-point play with 12:50 to go making the score 53-47.

The Gothic Knights got within 61-59 with 7:20 left on a layup down low by Toney however the Red Hawks responded with a nine-point run over the next four minutes to widen its lead to 11. Roberson got the first field goal and Chatham scored on the next trip down for a 65-59 lead. Yilmaz connected from the line and then hit a floater in the lane before Mitchell-White's layup gave the Red Hawks a
70-59 advantage with 3:53 remaining.

Yilmaz had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Red Hawks with Porter and DANIEL RAMIS each added nine points.  Chatham recorded six points along with three assists. MSU used a huge advantage on the boards outrebounding NJCU 48-28. The Red Hawks also got 24 points from its reserves compared to just eight for the Gothic Knights.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, January 6 when it hosts Stockton University at the Panzer Athletic Center. Tipoff the NJAC contest is set for 1:00 pm.
