No. 8 Field Hockey Upset No. 4 TCNJ in Overtime, 2-1

Rossi Nets Both as Red Hawks Take Down Lions for 7th Straight Victory

Ewing, NJ – Senior forward VICTORIA ROSSI scored both goals, including the game-winner in overtime as eighth-ranked Montclair State upset No. 4 The College of New Jersey 2-1 at Lions Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (14-1) extended their winning streak to seven games as it recorded one of its biggest victories in several years. Montclair, which stayed unbeaten in NJAC play at 4-0, snapped a five-game losing streak against the Lions and downed TCNJ for just the 10th time in 78 all-time meetings. MSU's win was its first versus New Jersey since the 2013 NJAC Championship and its first in Ewing since a 5-1 victory in 2012.

TCNJ took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest when Cayla Andrews dribbled to the top of the circle before sliding pass to the left side for Tori Tiefenthaler, who deposited a shot into the cage for her 10th goal of the season.

Montclair State would get that back five minutes later on the first of Rossi's two goals. ALEXA CONSTANTINE was able to get a pass to Rossi who chipped a shot over keeper Maddie Beaumont knotting the score at 1-1.

From there it would a defensive battle for the next 56 minutes as the Red Hawks got a huge effort from goalkeeper NICOLE ANDRIANI, who made eight saves in the first half keeping the game deadlocked. Andriani made back-to-back stopped against Jordan Allegretto and Andrews with five minutes to go and then posted saves versus Sidney Padilla and Tiefenthaler a minute later as the teams went into the break tied.

Andriani denied Kayla Peterson and Andrews on consecutive shots to begin the second half and Beaumont did the same for TCNJ with stops against KAILEY DALGAUER in the 46th minute and AMBER HASLETT with 11 minutes left.

Into the 7-on-7 overtime the game went where Montclair got two shots early that went wide. Padilla had a chance to win the game for the Lions however Andriani came up with her 12th and final save. That's because the ball transitioned back to the Red Hawks with Rossi going 1-on-1 against Beaumont on a breakaway for the game-winning goal at the 4:55 mark.

TCNJ outshot Montclair 17-9 as the Red Hawks also fended off 22 corners by the Lions. MSU recorded six.

Montclair State is now off and will take on local and league rival William Paterson in Wayne, NJ on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00 pm.
