CLAIRE LUIGARD and
MADISON FRANKE each won three individual events as the Montclair State women's swimming and diving team knocked off The College of New Jersey 168-126 in its NJAC opener on Saturday.
EMILY ROTHAMEL won twice while senior
GRACE NIELSEN swept the diving events for a second consecutive meet helping the Red Hawks square their record at 2-2 on the season (1-0 NJAC). Montclair won 13 events as they defeated the conference powerhouse Lions for a second straight season and just the sixth in in 48 all-time meets. MSU last posted back-to-back wins from 1984-86.
KEVIN CLAUSS swept the breaststroke events for the Red Hawk men, who fell to TCNJ 162-112. Montclair is now 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the NJAC.
Luigard took both breaststroke events winning the 100 in a time of 1:09.63 and the 200 in 2:31.55 before finishing her day with a victory in the 200 IM clocking in at 2:17.91. Luigard swam the second leg for the 200 medley relay squad that posted a time of 1:51.71 winning that event. Franke, the anchor leg of the relay, earned her first win in the 200 freestyle (2:02.34) and added another in the 50 free (25.34). Her third victory in the 100 freestyle (56.08) led a 1-2 finish by MSU as
CHRISTINA CUSMANO was second at 57.03 seconds.
Rothamel, the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay, took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.11 and later won the 200 event at 2:15.07 as
COURTNEY MUNRO was second in the event (2:16.71).
TAYLOR WADDLETON won the 1000 freestyle (11:09.28) with the 400 freestyle relay team of
ERIANNA NGUYEN, Waddleton, Cusmano and
MARGAUX WINCHOCK combining to win that event in a time of 3:46.56.
Nielsen scored 209.18 points to take top honors in the 3-meter event and scored 211.43 in the 1-meter.
PONSEE IBRAHIM was second in both posting scores of 161.70 in the 3-meter and 197.18 points in the 1-meter event.
Clauss swam 1:01.74 to win the 100 breaststroke and swept the event with a time of 2:16.89 in the 200 event. He was also second in the 200 IM clocking in at 2:06.83.
KEVIN GIBSON swam 5:01.99 to win the 500 freestyle.
HUNTER ROMANOWSKI recorded three second-place showings in the 200 freestyle (1:49.52), the 50 freestyle (22.77 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (49.04 seconds).
JAMES SINGEWALD was second in the 100 backstroke at 56.32 seconds.
Romanowski, Gregory Karback,
CHARLES COBBERTT and Gibson teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:21.40.
Montclair State returns to action next Saturday, November 3 when it hosts Rowan University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool beginning at 1pm.
