Montclair, NJ – Freshman
CARLY WATERMAN posted a match-high 16 kills as Montclair State stretched its winning streak to five matches with a 3-1 victory over Manhattanville College on Friday evening at the Panzer Athletic Center.
The Red Hawks improved to 12-5 on the season as they split the first two sets with the Valiants (7-7) by identical 25-18 scores. MSU captured the last two set with 25-14 and 22-25 victories. MSU improved to 13-2 all-time against Manhattanville.
Waterman had seven kills in the opening set as Montclair State got out to a 10-5 lead. The Valiants closed within two however Waterman had three in a four-point burst pushing the lead to 16-10. Setter
ASHLEY GRIFFITH collected a kill making the score 20-14 and then served up an ace bringing the Red Hawks to set point. A miscue by the Valiants ended the set giving MSU a 1-0 lead in the match.
After Manhattanville tied the match in the second,
JILLIAN WILSON sparked a five-point run as Montclair led 13-6.
CAITLIN LANGE added a kill and the Red Hawks took advantage of several miscues by the Valiants to widen its lead to 18-10.
ALEXANDRA CAMPOS and April DiAgnelo combined service on another four-point burst taking MSU to a 23-12 advantage. Waterman had a block for the 24
th points setting up a kill by
LEAH HIGGINS that gave Montclair the win 25-13 and a 2-1 lead in the contest.
The fourth set proved to be a much tighter battle with nine ties and a pair of lead changes. Knotted at 14-14, Waterman collected consecutive kills with
VICTORIA TENNON added another for an 18-14 advantage. Manhattanville would deadlock the score later on at 21-21 but a service error by MSU back in front. Lange registered a kill making the score 23-21. The Valiants kept the match going however
NATALIA MAJKUT put down on kill before Waterman ended the match with her eighth kill of the set.
Griffith finished with 32 assists and seven digs. Lange had six kills and three blocks with Campos totaling 19 digs.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 9 with a road trip to Galloway, NJ to face Stockton University in an NJAC contest beginning at 7pm.
