ALEX MCKINNON and sophomore
KIM CALLOWAY scored 17 points each as Montclair State bounced back from its first loss with a 75-60 victory over Drew University in the Rose City Classic at the Panzer Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore guard
TAYLOR BROWN posted a double-double as the Red Hawks improved to 2-1 on the season with a victory against its in-state rival. It was the first meeting between the teams since December 2012. Montclair leads the all-time series 5-1.
Montclair led for all but 1:17 of the game and were down 7-6 with 6:52 to play in the opening quarter before Calloway, named to the All-Tournament Team, hit two from the line putting MSU in front. The Red Hawks held a slim margin until the final two minutes when it ended the quarter on a 10-1 run. Calloway accounted for the first seven points including a fast-break layup with 55 seconds left. McKinnon got the final three capping off the run with a layup before the buzzer as Montclair State led 22-11.
Freshman
TRISHA PETERSON connected on a three-pointer with 6:51 left in the second to make the score 27-15 and the lead grew to 36-19 with two minutes remaining after Brown buried a three.
KAYLA BUSH got the final field goal for Montclair which took a 38-26 lead into the break.
Drew would cut the deficit inside double digits once as Julia Ramos converted a three-point play with 2:10 left in the third getting the Rangers within 50-41. Brown answered with a layup and Calloway's short jumper with one second left put the Red Hawks in front 54-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
Calloway, 9-of-10 from the line in the game, added nine rebounds and three assists Peterson and
DOMONIQUE WIRSING added seven and six points apiece for Montclair. MSU shot 52 percent (28-of-47) from the field and outrebounded the Rangers 39-25.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, November 20 as it opens up NJAC play. The Red Hawks host local rival William Paterson at 6:00 pm.
