St. Petersburg, FL – The Montclair State women's basketball team dropped its first game in the St. Petersburg Classic on Wednesday as the Red Hawks fell to undefeated Wisconsin Lutheran, 58-47 snapping the Red Hawks two-game losing streak.
Jen Dowden posted a game-high 26 points while Lexi Reinke added 14 points for the Warriors, who upped their record to 8-0 on the season.
DOMONIQUE WIRSING and
ALEX MCKINNON finished with 11 and 10 points respectively for Montclair (9-3).
Wisconsin Lutheran scored the first seven points of the game and led 12-6 after one quarter.
KAYLA BUSH hit two free throws to trim the deficit to four points however Reinke hit a jumper and Dowden drained a three-pointer with 5:05 to play making the score 17-8. A Jenna Mace three-pointer gave the Warriors their largest lead of the half at 23-9. McKinnon connected at the line with 47 seconds left getting the Warrior lead back to eight which would be the margin Wisconsin Lutheran took in to the break, 28-20.
Sophomore
TAYLOR BROWN drained a three-pointer opening the second half as Montclair pulled within 28-23 and her layup less than a minute later made the score 30-25. But Dowden scored nine of the next 11 points extending the Warrior lead to 41-26 with 5:45 to go in the period.
Brown and
KIM CALLOWAY each finished with seven points while
CERYS MACLELLAND added six along with five rebounds. Wirsing and McKinnon each grabbed four rebounds.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, December 20 with their second game on the St. Petersburg Classic. Montclair State faces Albright College at 1:00 pm.
