Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Red Hawks fell to The College of New Jersey 58-42 at Packer Hall.
Sophomore forward
KAYLA BUSH led MSU with 10 points and six rebounds as Montclair dropped to 7-2 on the season while suffering its first conference loss (4-1). Jen Byrne led the Lions (5-3, 4-1 NJAC) with 15 points while Shannon Devitt posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Montclair State struggled shooting the ball in the first half connecting on just 6-of-25 attempts from the floor (24 percent). The Red Hawks held two early two-point leads and a jumper by
KIM CALLOWAY with 4:31 left knotted the game at 6-6. The Lions however closed out the quarter with seven straight for an 11-6 advantage.
Elle Cimilluca connected from behind the arc two minutes into the second quarter for a 16-10 lead and a free throw by Byrne made the score 18-10 with 2:58 remaining. Wirsing answered for Montclair a minute later before TCNJ netted the final seven points for a 25-12 lead at the break.
Wirsing and Brown each finished with eight points for the Red Hawks, who got six points from Calloway. Freshman
JULIA SUTTON and
KELLY SMITH chipped in with four points apiece.
The Red Hawks will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, December 12 when it hosts Rutgers-Newark at the Panzer Athletic Center with tipoff of the NJAC contest set for 6:00 pm.
