Carlisle, PA – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team dropped its 2018 season opener on Saturday as the Red Hawks fell to 14
th-ranked Dickinson College 25-8 at Biddle Field.
Senior
BRADY WULSTER scored four times for the Red Hawks (0-1) while junior
MATT HAEMMERLE added two goals and an assist.
BRYAN PETERS and
DAN BELLEZZA each added one goal and one assist.
Bellezza gave MSU a quick 1-0 lead as he scored an unassisted goal 74 seconds into the game. Brodie Phillips answered less than minute later and goal by Nick Goles put the Devils (2-0) on top 2-1. Haemmerle tied the game back up with 7:58 to play however Dickinson scored the final four goals, the last three by Dylan Maher for a 7-2 lead after one quarter.
Maher scored twice more as the Devils opened up the second with three straight building a 10-2 advantage. Montclair State countered with the next four goals. Peters got the first before Wulster collected the next two. Haemmerle's second with 2:52 to play cut the lead to 10-6 however Dickinson closed out the quarter with a three-goal burst taking a 13-6 lead into the break.
The Devils dominated the third scoring 12 straight goals, including four in the first 4:56 of the period. Maher, who finished with 11 points on the day, had two goals and two assists in the run which was broken with 14 seconds left on Wulster's third tally of the contest.
MATT AXMANN had 12 faceoff victories and five ground balls for MSU, which received three ground balls apiece from
RICKY GERENA and
ANDREW MONAHAN.
JACK CARDEW had eight saves for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, February 28 with its home opener at Sprague Field against Vassar College with game time set for 6:00 pm.
