Montclair, NJ – Sophomore righthander
NICOLE MAJEWSKI allowed a run and seven hits in a complete-game effort as Montclair State split its NJAC doubleheader with Stockton University on Saturday at the MSU Softball Stadium.
The Red Hawks (17-9, 5-5 NJAC) bounced back from an 8-6 loss in the opener for a 3-1 victory. Senior catcher
ALANA LUNA went 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI including a 3-for-3 performance in the second contest.
All of the scoring in the second game took place in the first inning. Alexandra Cosenzo belted a solo home run in the first which turned out to be the only blemish on Majewski's afternoon. Trailing 1-0, the Red Hawks answered with three runs, all coming with two outs.
VALENTINA CUCCI flared a single to right field scoring
KAYLEE POWERS and
AMBER POWERS followed with a triple making the score 2-0. Luna punched a single through the left side giving Montclair State a
three-run lead.
Majewski (7-1) made that hold with help from her defense that turned in several spectacular plays. The Ospreys had first and second with one out in the third. Alexa Massa lined a ball back up the middle that
AMBER POWERS snared and stepped on second for an inning-ending double play. Left fielder
VICTORIA GEHRING made a diving catch along the left field line in the fourth after an inning-opening single and third baseman
ELENA RADESICH made a bare-handed play on a bunt to finish off the fifth inning with a runner on.
Majewski wiggled out of a first and third situation in the sixth with one out getting a line out to third and a comebacker end the inning. She then retired the side in order in the seventh.
AMBER POWERS had two hits for MSU.
In the first game, clean innings were hard to find. Each team scored a run in the first and second innings with Stockton taking the lead in the third as it scored twice. The Ospreys added four runs in the fourth for a 7-3 lead. Cosenzo had an RBI double and Ashley Lobell plated the final run with a double to left field.
Montclair State closed the gap to a run in the bottom of the fourth as Radeisch cracked a bases-clearing double making the score 7-6. Daniela Marinaro doubled home an insurance run in the seventh which proved to be important as MSU put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the inning with two outs. Pitcher Hannah Bibeault left them there with a ground out to give the Ospreys the first-game victory.
Bibeault (11-1) for the win for Stockton while Cucci (4-2) suffered the loss. Gehring, Radesich and
BLAKE SAPERSTEIN had two hits apiece for MSU.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 17 at home against New Jersey City. First pitch of the NJAC doubleheader is set for 3:00 pm.
