SKYLER FRANCISCO scored twice igniting a five-goal run in the fourth quarter as Montclair State regrouped during lightning delay and rallied past University of Scranton, 11-10 at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.
MATT HAEMMERLE scored four times as the Red Hawks comeback in the final period snapped a two-game losing streak. MSU improved to 8-6 on the year. Connor Kirkwood and Conor Carey had three goals apiece for Scranton, which fell to 10-6.
The Royals led most of the way and were up 8-5 a minute into the fourth when a flash of lightning forced the game to be halted. The stoppage proved to be beneficial for MSU which scored a minute into restart on a goal by Papa. Carey answered for Scranton with 10:30 to go pushing the lead to 9-6.
Montclair then took control with five straight goals in a span of just over four minutes. Francisco scored on the man-advantage with 8:53 left and added another two minutes later cutting the deficit to 9-8. Papa knotted the game up with six minutes. Haemmerle gave the Red Hawks their first lead at 10-9 with 4:46 remaining.
DAN BELLEZZA came up with a huge goal 22 seconds later as MSU led by two.
Goalkeeper
JACK CARDEW kept the margin there as he stopped Tim Dolan with 2:20 to go. After matching penalties were issued with 1:11 left, Carey scored nine ticks later putting the score 11-10. The Red Hawks won the faceoff and were able to run the clock down to 16 seconds before turning the ball over.
Scranton raced down the field and got into the offensive zone however the Royals were unable to get off a shot as time expired.
Papa recorded a pair of assists for MSU which got 10 saves from Cardew.
NICK SNOW forced three turnovers, scooped up four ground balls and was 4-for-7 on faceoffs in the final period.
The Red Hawks close out their regular season on Friday, May 4 at Kean University with faceoff scheduled for 7:00 pm.
