KAILEY DALGAUER with 16 minutes left in the second half lifting No. 10 Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over DeSales University on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Hawks used a smothering defense and did not allow a shot as they improved to 2-0 on the year. It's the 14
th time in the last 16 years that MSU has opened the season with back-to-back victories. Katarina Polyviou made three saves for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-1.
Neither team could get much of an advantage in the first half as the defenses limited shots to just three, all by MSU. Polyviou made a stop against Dalgauer at the 21:34 mark and
ELIZABETH CIMILLUCA sent one wide off a penalty corner seven minutes later.
ALEXA CONSTANTINE sent a shot toward the cage inside five minutes that was blocked.
The Red Hawks stepped up the offensive pressure in the second half outshooting the Bulldogs 9-0 however it still could not find the back cage. Cimilluca and Dalgauer had shots go wide in the first 15 minutes and Polyviou came up with save against Constantine at the 47:42 mark.
A penalty corner helped break the deadlock.
HANNAH BOLLINGER inserted the ball to Cimilluca who then slid a pass across to Dalgauer. Dalgauer took the feed and moved to her right before firing a shot that slipped past the left blocker of Polyviou for a 1-0 Red Hawk advantage.
NICOLE ANDRIANI earned her first career shutout in the victory. MSU also held the advantage in penalty corner, 14-2.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, September 6 when it hosts New Paltz at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm.
