Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State football team got back on the winning track with a 10-7 win over TCNJ on Saturday afternoon.
Senior wide receiver KASON CAMPBELL hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass on fourth and goal from quarterback Jaquill Burch for the difference as the Red Hawks (2-3,1-1) snapped a two-game losing streak. The go-ahead score happened with 3:01 left in the game.
Burch ended the game 22-for-35 for 218 yards and one score in the win. Campbell made six receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown to lead the Red Hawks.
TCNJ (1-4, 1-1) took a 7-0 lead on its first possession as Vinny Guckin hauled in a three-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Donoghue. The pass capped a 9-play 69-yard touchdown drive to give the Lions an early lead.
Montclair State would score on its first possession as Anthony Marinel converted on a 30-yard field goal, making it 7-3 with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter.
The two defenses were locked in a stalemate for 16 consecutive possessions, each of which ended with a punt.
Montclair State finally broke through with a 10-play 50-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Burch went 7-for-7 on the game winning drive while accruing 49 of the 50 total yards in the drive.
MSU would hold onto the lead as DIMITRI PALI stopped Andrew Donoghue two yards short on a fourth down scramble.
ZACK ZACCONE had a team-high eight tackles as BRENNAN RAY chipped in with seven stops and half a sack. DOMINIC FERRARA added a solo sack and five tackles for a Red Hawk defense that limited TCNJ to 0 points over the final 55 minutes of action
Montclair State is back home at Sprague Field next Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup against Christopher Newport.
