Hartford, Conn. – The Montclair State women's basketball team was topped by host Trinity College 74-52 in the consolation game of the Trinity College Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
The Red Hawks (1-2) shot just 28.8% from the field while the Bantams (1-1) shot 43.1%.
Montclair started strong, scoring the first five points of the afternoon, capped off by a jumper from senior
ALEX MCKINNON. The host Bantams answered back with a 9-1 spurt spanning four minutes. Trinity opened up a six-point lead after the first 10 minutes, holding Montclair to no field goals over the final 7:16.
Freshman
NICOLE CARTER stopped the run with a three-pointer 2:01 into the second stanza, but the Bantams able to open up a double-digit advantage midway through the period. A Carter three-pointer brought Montclair to within six; however, the home side closed out the half with the final seven markers en route to a 39-26 halftime lead.
Carter had three of the four Red Hawks baskets in the third period, extending their lead to 21. A jumper with 5:46 left in the final stanza gave Trinity their largest advantage of the afternoon, but Montclair would roll off the next five tallies to stop the run. Rookie
SANIYA MYERS registered the final five points for the Red Hawks to close out the game.
The rookie Carter came off the bench to lead Montclair State with 18 points while adding a pair of rebounds. Senior
CERYS MACLELLAND chipped in eight with a team-high four assists, with Myers adding seven. Trinity had three players in double-figures, led by 23 from Bria Fuller. Peace Kabari notched a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
