Quigley's Golden Goal Makes MSU Elite in NCAA Tournament, 2-1

Red Hawks Down Kenyon; Faces Center (KY) for Final Four Spot on Sunday

Gambier, Ohio – Sophomore BROGAN QUIGLEY scored in the 105th minute to send the Montclair State men's soccer team into the "Elite 8" of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 2-1 win over No. 9 Kenyon College Saturday.

Montclair State (18-4-2) will face Centre College (19-3-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a berth to the Final Four on the line. Centre advanced to the Sectional Final with a 4-2 triumph over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the earlier game. The Red Hawks handed Kenyon (19-2-2) their first loss at home since September 21, 2017, when they lost in double overtime to Heidelberg University. Montclair is making a return trip to the Sectional Final and their sixth appearance overall.

The Red Hawks had the first chance of the afternoon, as freshman OSCAR SANCHEZ put a low shot on target that was knocked away by the Lords' Ian McInturf. Senior defender DeVaughn Foster had an 11th minute opportunity from distance that was blocked by the defenders. Kenyon put pressure on the Montclair backline midway through the period with a header by Jack Cohen punched away by keeper MICHAEL MEJIA. Mejia was aided minutes later by a teammate, as a header off a corner was cleared off the line just before crossing over.

With a little over 13 minutes remaining in the opening half, the Red Hawks broke through for the opening goal. Rookie JUSTIN GOLDBERG worked the ball into the box and found the foot of sophomore ANTHONY PELAEZ. Palaez slid a pass to Sanchez, who deked around a defender. With the ball on his left foot, he ripped a shot that glanced off a defender and in for his 15th tally of the year. Mejia came up big for the Red Hawks in the 43rd minute coming well off his line to make a sliding challenge with the Lords attacking.

The Lords held a slim 6-4 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes, including a 4-2 edge in shots on target.

The junior Mejia denied the Lords again opening the second period, making a sliding stop 2:34 into the frame. Goldberg nearly doubled the lead in the 59th and 60th minutes, but both tries were just off. In the 73rd minute, senior NIXON SOGLO moved in one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot was blocked and rolled out for a corner kick. The Lords found the equalizing tally with just 9:39 left in the second half, as a free-kick by Max Taylor found the top corner. Kenyon rang a shot off the crossbar with two minutes remaining, and two sides moved into overtime.

The first overtime saw Mejia sprawl out to make a stop with under a minute remaining, and the game progressed into a second extra session. After the Lords were whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box, Quigley served in a low ball that evaded McInturf, pushing the Red Hawks deeper into the tournament.

Goldberg came off the bench with three shots, while Soglo and Sanchez each recorded two. Mejia stopped a season-high eight shots to earn the win. Scott Upton and Sebastian Gaese led the Lords with four shots, with McInturf making two saves.
