Sanchez Second-Half Goal Sends Men's Soccer in NJAC Title Game

Red Hawks Edge Stockton, 2-1; Will Face Rowan on Saturday

Montclair, N.J. – Freshman OSCAR SANCHEZ notched the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to send second-seeded Montclair State men's soccer team past sixth-seeded Stockton University 2-1 in the New Athletic Conference semifinals Wednesday.

Montclair (15-4-1) moves onto the championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host fourth-seeded Rowan University at MSU Soccer Park. The Red Hawks fell 3-2 in double overtime to the Profs on September 28, with Sanchez netting both goals in the loss.

Neither side was able to apply much offensive pressure, as the Ospreys (10-6-4) recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 34th minute. The Red Hawks nearly broke in the 39th minute, as senior NIXON SOGLO had his chance off a corner kick cleared off the line by an Osprey defender.

After an Osprey foul, DeVaughn Foster sent a free-kick into the box. It was knocked down by BRENT LLEWELLYN and found the foot of Soglo, who converted for his fourth goal of the season. The lead lasted all of 59 seconds, as Darnell Lopez knocked off an Ervin Gjeli cross to level the game at one entering halftime.

Junior MICHAEL MEJIA kept the score even at one by making saves in the 47th and 62nd minutes. After senior JOSE HUERTA had a chance deflected out for a corner, the senior crossed in a perfect ball. Sanchez was on the receiving end and recorded his 11th marker of the season to give Montclair a 2-1 lead.

The Ospreys threw numbers forward, pressing to try the tying goal. The Red Hawk defensive core didn't break and held Stockton without a shot on goal over the 25 minutes. Stockton had 10 shots over the final 45 minutes, with none going on target.

Soglo and ANTHONY PELAEZ each registered two shots, while Meija made three saves for the victory. Dante Montesinos had a game-high five shot attempts in the setback.
