Red Hawks Tripped Up by Rutgers-Camden; Earns NJAC Tourney Third Seed

MSU Falls 64-54; Will Face Kean in First Round on Saturday

Montclair, NJ – Senior guard Gabby Greene scored 20 pints with Wykira Johnson-Kelly added 17 as Rutgers-Camden derailed Montclair State's bid for a bye in the first round of the upcoming NJAC Tournament with a 64-54 victory at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Fatimah Williams added 13 points as the Scarlet Raptors (15-10, 10-8 NJAC) improved their seeding for the conference tournament by knocking off the Red Hawks for the second time this season.
Rutgers-Camden will be the No. 5 seed and head to fourth-seeded Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, February 16 for the first round.

Senior DOMONIQUE WIRSING posted a double-double for MSU, which had its four-game winning streak snapped. Montclair State (16-9, 12-6 NJAC) will be the No. 3 seed and host sixth-seeded Kean University at the PAC on Saturday at 3pm. The six-time defending champion Red Hawks will be playing in a first-round game for the first time since 2012.

Wirsing gave Montclair State a 6-2 lead four minutes into the contest and her jumper a minute later made the score 8-5. Greene tied the game with a three sparking an 11-0 run by the Scarlet Raptors. Breanna Ettrick hit a jumper with 2:10 to go for a 16-8 advantage.

Leading 17-10 after one quarter, Rutgers-Camden expanded its lead with a 15-5 run in the first six minutes of the second. Johnson-Kelly capped the spurt with a three-pointer giving the Raptors a 32-15 lead with 4:12 left. Johnson-Kelly got the final points with 96 seconds to play as the visitors led 36-23 at the break.

The Red Hawks were able to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter getting within three points late in the period. Wirsing hit twice from the line with 2:31 making the score 42-39. Shane Holmes answered with two foul shots however JULIA SUTTON hit from short range getting MSU back to 44-41. Greene delivered a three-pointer at the other end boosting the lead back to six as Rutgers-Camden scored the final six points taking a 50-41 lead into the fourth.

An ALEX MCKINNON three to begin the fourth trimmed the lead to 50-44 but Greene sank two foul shots at the other end Wirsing's field goal made it a six-point game once more however Williams scored and Johnson-Kelly hit on foul shot boosting the lead to 55-46 with 4:35 remaining. MSU would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

MSU and Kean split their regular-season meetings with each winning on the other's home floor. The Red Hawks earned a 73-58 victory in Union back on December 1 with the Cougars registering an 83-65 win at the Panzer Athletic Center on January 28.
