Rowan Comeback Stuns Montclair State, 92-90

Profs Score Final Seven Points to Top Red Hawks

Montclair, NJ – Rowan University senior guard Nick DePersia connected on a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining as the Profs stunned Montclair State 92-90 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

DePersia finished with 23 points as the Profs (17-5, 11-4 NJAC) scored the final seven points in the last 23 seconds to complete a sweep of the season series. DaRon Curry collected 13 points as Rowan placed six players in double figures.

Junior guard AKBAR HOFFMAN had 21 points for Montclair State (14-8, 9-6 NJAC), which dropped its second straight contest. JORDAN ROBERSON added 16 points and nine rebounds as the Red Hawks also had six players reach double figures.

Rowan trailed for virtually the entire game as MSU got off to a quick start in the first half. The Profs held two short-lived leads midway through the second half and were down 90-85 when Rob DePersia drove in for a layup cutting the lead to three. On the ensuing inbound for Montclair, the Profs fouled however an offsetting foul by the Red Hawks in the dead ball gave each team free throws. The Red Hawks missed their two opportunities while Rob DePersia hit both trimming the lead to 90-89.

Rowan got possession off the deadball foul call against Montclair State. Nick DePersia got the ball at the top of the key and fired a shot that bounced off the rim, into the air and then straight through the net giving the Profs the two-point advantage. Montclair would get one last chance however a JOSEPH RADI three-point attempt from straight away went off the rim.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 12-2 lead and led 31-22 with 7:43 to play in the first half on a layup by Roberson. Rowan cut that deficit back to four points late in the period but MSU boosted the lead back to 43-33 with 1:40 to go as JUSTIN PORTER scored on a layup. Hoffman's layup with 36 seconds to play gave Montclair a 45-36 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Rowan pulled within 54-51 five minutes into the second half as Diante Bah put in a layup. The Red Hawks countered with a seven-point run taking a 61-51 advantage on an IRVING CALLENDER IV lead with just over 14 minutes left. The Profs would go on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes taking its first lead at 64-63 a three-pointer by Austin Kearney.

The lead changed hands on each of the next possessions. JALEN PARHAM threw down a dunk to put MSU back in front. Nick DePersia came down and drilled a three vaulting Rowan back on top 67-65 which was then answered by a Radi three-point as Montclair State led 68-67 with 10:45 left.

Montclair would maintain the lead and held an 85-79 lead with two minutes to go after MYLES MITCHELL-WHITE sank two from the line. The Red Hawks would hit four more at the charity stripe and led 89-83 with 36 seconds left. Rob DePersia's jumper with 36 seconds made it a four-point game. Mitchell-White hit one free throw for the 90-85 lead setting up the final moments.

Mitchell-White and Callender each had 12 points while Parham and Radi netted 10 apiece.

Montclair will look to snap its two-game skid on Wednesday, February 6 when it travels to Rutgers-Newark for an 8pm matchup with the Scarlet Raiders in the Golden Dome. MSU won the first matchup 59-55 at the Panzer Athletic Center on December 12.
