Galloway, NJ – Junior righthander
NICOLE MAJEWSKI tossed a complete game in the opener as Montclair State earned a split of its NJAC opener at Stockton University on Saturday.
Majewski's effort lifted the Red Hawks (18-4, 1-1 NJAC) to a 2-1 victory in the opener extending MSU's in streak to 16 games. That would end in the second game as Montclair fell 10-7 after battling back from a 7-0 deficit.
Majewski allowed six hits and struck out one as she won the tightly-contested contest. Montclair was able to scratch out a run in the second.
LIA STAMILE walked and went to second on a wild pitch. A error allowed her to go to third and she would come home on a ground out by
BLAKE SAPERSTEIN for the first run of the game.
MSU manufactured another run in the third.
KAYLEE POWERS singled with one out and stole second. A pair of walks to
VALENTINA CUCCI and Stamile loaded the bases. Samantha DiClementi lofted a sacrifice fly scoring Powers for a 2-0 Montclair State advantage.
Stockton would break through in the fourth as a single and double put runners at second and third with no outs. Lily James laid down a bunt scoring pinch-runner Marissa Fulcher trimming the lead to 2-1. But Majewski retired the next two hitters keeping the Red Hawks in front. She would retire eight of the final 11 hitters to end the game.
Saperstein collected two of Montclair's six hit in the game.
In the second game, the Ospreys (11-7, 1-1 NJAC) scored three times in the second and added four more in the third for a 7-0 lead. Montclair erased that all in the fourth. Saperstein drove in the first run with a single and DiClementi doubled in two more before an RBI ground out by
ALEXIS LAW cut the deficit to 7-4. Powers doubled home the fifth run and MSU tied the game at 7-7 on an error allowing two runners to come home.
But Stockton untied the game in the bottom of the inning. Ashley Lobell pushed across the go-ahead run with a single with a second run coming home on an error. Carli Shaw's infield single gave the Ospreys the 10-7 lead.
Cucci (5-1) took the loss in relief. Freshman righthander
ALYSSA BERNARDO pitched three scoreless innings striking out one.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, April 2 hosting Rutgers-Newark in an NJAC twinbill at the MSU Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
