Softball Shut Down by No. 20 TCNJ Twice

Lions Blank Red Hawks 5-0 & 4-0

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore righthanders Eliza Sweet and Alanna Namit tossed complete-game shutouts as No. 20 The College of New Jersey swept past Montclair State 5-0 and 4-0 at the MSU Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Jess McGuire belted a home run and drove in four runs on the day as the Lions (23-5) extended their winning streak to 13 games while remaining unbeaten in NJAC play at 10-0. ELENA RADESICH went 3-for-3 in the nightcap for MSU (24-8, 5-5 NJAC).

Sweet tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out five as she upped her record to 10-2 on the season. NICOLE MAJEWSKI (7-2) took the loss for Montclair State.

TCNJ got all the runs it would need in the top of the first inning. Katie Winchock doubled with one out and Lauren Conroy followed with another for the game's first run. McGuire belted a two-run homer, her fifth of the year as the Lions led 3-0.

The Lions added a run in the fifth. Winchock laid down a bunt single and stole second before going to third on a deep fly ball to right by Conroy. McGuire brought her home with a sac fly making the score 4-0. A misplayed ground ball in the sixth allowed Gabby Bennett to come home with the final run.

Winchock and Bennett had three hits apiece for TCNJ. Elyse Nardozza was 2-for-4.

Allie Immerso beat out an infield hit to open the third inning of the second game and scored two batters later when Winchock doubled down the left field line for a 1-0 advantage. The score remained that way until the fifth when TCNJ scored three times. Conroy tripled in two runs and McGuire followed with a single giving the Lions a four-run advantage.

Namit made that hold up as she improved to 11-2 on the year. The righty gave up four hits, struck out eight and worked her way around five walks. VALENTINA CUCCI (7-2) took the loss for MSU.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, April 19 with a road NJAC doubleheader at New Jersey City University. First pitch at the Thomas M. Gerrity Complex is set for 3:00 pm.
