Women's Lacrosse Falls Short Against Rowan in NJAC Tournament, 13-9

Orban Four Goals as Red Hawks Finish Season at 10-8

Glassboro, NJ – Rowan University's Maddie Bray scored five times while Taylor Gretz added three goals as the second-seeded Profs ousted third-seeded Montclair State from the NJAC Women's Lacrosse Championship with a 13-9 victory at Wackar Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Liz Kramer also had three goals as the Profs (11-6) advance to the championship game on Saturday, May 4 at top-seeded and No. 17 The College of New Jersey. Senior CHELSEA ORBAN collected four goals for the Red Hawks, who finish their season at 10-8.

Kramer recorded the game's first goal 3:35 into the contest and then set up Bray with 22:22 left for a 2-0 lead. MSU answered with three in a row starting with a SYDNEE SAPP goal. MEGAN MAHLSTADT assisted on Orban's first goal and then got one herself with 12:32 to go giving Montclair a 3-2 lead.

Elise Cohan tied things up again with just under eight minutes to play however Sapp's second with 3:19 remaining made it a 4-3 contest. Rowan countered with four straight for a 7-4 lead. Ashley Lechliter got the first with 2:38 left with Kramer scoring 32 seconds later putting the Profs in front. Bray notched her second with 1:35 to go and a goal by Gretz with 47 ticks gave Rowan the three-goal lead. Orban tallied with 24 seconds left as MSU trailed 7-5 at the break.

Gretz and Orban traded goals to open the second half with Gretz scoring again for a 9-6 Profs advantage. Bray connected with 13:09 to play extending the lead to 10-6. BRITTANY COSTIGAN finished off a KYLE GRAVER feed to close the gap to three however Bray and Kramer combined on a goal with 6:32 remaining for an 11-7 lead.

Orban got MSU back to three with 4:58 to play however Kramer and Bray each found the back of the net over the next two minutes widening the lead to 13-8. Costigan scored the final goal with 12 seconds.

Costigan finished with seven draws and she raised her season-record total to 139. She also collected two ground balls. LEANNE MCCLOSKEY and goalkeeper ALLYN LILIEN each had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. AMANDA MAGUIRE stopped six shots with Lilien making seven over the final 30 minutes.

Orban's four goals gave her 61 for the season, tied for the fifth-best total in program history. She also finished her career tied for 10th on the all-time scoring list with 197 points and her 157 goals is No. 9 on the list.

Wednesday's game marked the sixth straight season the teams have met in the semifinals since the tournament's inception in 2013. Rowan, which also collected a 9-8 overtime win during the regular season, has won four the six meetings.
