Volleyball Rolls to Fourth Straight Win

Freshman Arias Leads Red Hawks Over Mt. St. Mary

Montclair, NJ – Freshman GIANNA ARIAS collected seven kills and five blocks as Montclair State extended its winning streak to four with a three-set sweep of Mount St. Mary at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Junior setter MEGAN O'ROURKE totaled 18 assists, three aces and six digs as MSU (5-2) knocked off the Knights (3-6) by scored of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-17.

Arias had four kills with CARLY WATERMAN and LEAH HIGGINS each adding three in the first set as Montclair trailed 7-5 before ripping off six straight points behind the service of senior JILLIAN WILSON. Arias and O'Rouke each had kills and combined on a block giving the Red Hawks an 11-7 lead. MADDIE VALKO served up back-to-back aces widening the lead to 19-10 before Mount St. Mary pulled within four at 23-19 following an ace by Alyssa Barbara. Arias countered with a kill and then teamed with Higgins on a block to close out the set.

In the second set, MSU led 5-1 early and eventually got to lead to 19-7 after a five-point run that included consecutive kills by Waterman. Following a Knights' point, SCHYLER WHITE sparked a five-point run bringing Montclair State with a point of the set at 24-8. ALEXANDRA CAMPOS had two aces. Mount St. Mary would hold off one set point however the Knights committed an attack error on the next rally giving MSU a 2-0 lead in the match.

SIYARA HERBERT served five straight points leading to a 7-1 lead in the third for the Red Hawks. The advantage exploded to 19-5 following a six-point spurt. CAITLIN AARTS served five of those including an ace with Herbert notching two kills. Mount St. Mary climbed back into the set and got to 22-16. Freshman JENNA TRONIO ended that with a kill and a miscue by the Knights made the score 24-16. MSU committed a service error however the visitors gave it right back to close out the match.

Valko registered a match-high 13 digs with Herbert adding six.

The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, September 17 with its first New Jersey Athletic Conference contest of the year. MSU hosts two-time defending champion Kean University in a rematch of last season's title contest. First serve at the Panzer Athletic Center is set for 7:00 pm.
