Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 10 Field Hockey Clipped by Sixth-Ranked Vassar, 1-0

Andriani Eight Saves as Red Hawks Suffer First Loss

Montclair, NJ – Vassar College's Grace Amell scored the game's only goal with 9:33 left in the first half lifting sixth-ranked Vassar College to a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Montclair State at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Julianna Smith stopped five shots with Vassar getting three key defensive saves as the Brewers (6-0) captured the battle of Top 10 unbeaten squads. NICOLE ANDRIANI had eight saves for the Red Hawks, who fell to 5-1 on the season.

Andriani stopped Sam Kass on a shot five minutes into the contest with Montclair getting an opportunity two minutes later off a corner. Keely Winn ripped a shot from the right side that was prevented from going in by defender Ally Aquilina-Piscitello.

Andriani made another save in the final minute of the first and opened the second with back-to-back stops against Rylie Pope and Cristina Lopez off a corner. But the Brewers kept the pressure up with Lopez slipping a pass to Amell who flipped a shot over a sprawled-out Andriani for her third of the season and a 1-0 lead.

That score would hold up the remainder of the half as Smith made two saves, including a one versus ELIZABETH CIMILLUCA with 1:26 left in the first half. Andriani kept the deficit at a goal in the third as he denied Vassar three times, including consecutive shots by Pope 6:49 into the second half.

Smith protected the 1-0 margin in the fourth with two saves against Cimilluca in the first three minutes. She then got help from her defense as Nikki Pollotta made a defensive save with 13:20 left. Eight minutes later, Smith made one stop however the ball came loose in front with MSU getting a chance to tie the game. However, Lopez was able to sweep the attempt away keeping Vassar in front.

Each team got off 11 shots in the game with Montclair holding the edge in penalty corner, 8-6.

The Red Hawks will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, September 21 when it hosts Gwynedd-Merch at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
