Montclair, NJ – Freshman guard NICKIE CARTER scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first half a Montclair State snapped Rowan University's nine-game winning streak with a 76-50 victory at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.
Senior forward ALEX MCKINNON added 14 points as the Red Hawks (10-4, 5-2 NJAC) extended their current win streak to five games while knocking off the Profs for the 11th straight meeting.
Freshman guard Savanna Holt finished with 10 points in a reserve role for Rowan (12-2), which lost for the first time since November 23 in addition to its first conference setback of the season.
MSU never trailed in the contest and scored nine of the first 10 points of the game. KAYLA BUSH had a layup, and Carter hit two at the line before Rowan got on the board with one foul shot. Carter connected again from close range before a three by McKinnon with 7:04 left made the score 9-1. Rowan dipped the lead back to six with just under four minutes remaining. However, Carter scored 12 straight, giving the Red Hawks a 23-7 advantage. Peterson buried a three just before the buzzer as Montclair led 28-11 after one quarter.
MSU increased its lead in the second as TAYLOR BROWN hit from behind the arc and McKinnon a jumper in the paint extending the lead to 37-16 midway through the quarter. CERYS MACLELLAND gave Montclair State its most significant advantage in the half at 41-19 with 2:11 to go. Eliana Santana answered for Rowan in the final minute as Montclair went into the locker room up 41-21.
Peterson added 12 points off the bench for MSU, which received five points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists from MacLelland. KIM CALLOWAY contributed to the big victory with six points, five rebounds, and four steals. The Red Hawks dominated on the boards outrebounding the Profs 56-39, including 21 offensive caroms.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 14, when it hosts Rutgers-Camden at the Panzer Athletic Center. The tipoff of the NJAC contest is at 6:00 pm.
