STEVE BREEMAN collected his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, however, Stockton University built a six-point advantage at halftime and posted an 80-68 victory over Montclair State on Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard
AKBAR HOFFMAN added a team-high 14 points as the Red Hawks (8-8) closed out the first half of its conference schedule at 6-3. DJ Campbell had 25 points and Jordan Williams 16 and 10 boards for the Ospreys (11-5, 8-1 NJAC).
Stockton took an early lead, but Montclair tied the game at 11-11 on a three-pointer by
EDDIE EMEDOH and led by four with 11:22 left after
JALEN PARHAM sank two free throws. A foul shot by Breeman kept the lead at four before the Ospreys scored nine straight and built a 30-25 lead on a three-pointer by Taylor with 8:30 to go. The Ospreys maintained that advantage until two minutes to go in the half.
JOSEPH RADI hit from behind the arc bringing MSU within 41-39. But Williams answered with two from the line and later added a bucket with 1:32 left sending Stockton into the break with a 45-39 lead.
Breeman's jumper early in the second half cut the lead down to 47-42 before Stockton ripped off 11 straight points to take control. Campbell had the first seven, including a three to ignite the spurt with field goals by Kiyon Flanders and Jordan, making the score 58-42 near the 10-minute mark of the period.
The Red Hawks would whittle the deficit to six points over the next nine minutes. A fast-break layup by
JUSTIN PORTER got MSU to 74-68 with 1:45 to play. However, Kadian Dawkins answered with a jumper, and Jordan made two free throws pushing the lead back to 78-68 with a minute remaining.
Porter added 12 points and four rebounds with DeArius Brown added eight in a reserve role.
Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, January 22, at the Panzer Athletic Center hosting local rival William Paterson at 8:00 pm. MSU will look to sweep the season series after edging the Pioneers 106-105 in overtime back in November on a Hoffman jumper at the buzzer.
