23-0 Run Bridging Second and Third Quarters Broke Game Open

Montclair, NJ – Senior ALEX MCKINNON and freshman NICKIE CARTER each scored 16 points to lead the Montclair State women's basketball team past Stevens 64-48 Friday.

The Red Hawks (8-4) won their ninth consecutive game over their in-state rival Ducks (3-7) and are 10-2 in all-time matchups.

The Ducks opened the game with a layup before Montclair reeled off nine straight tallies. Carter had four points during the spurt with McKinnon and junior TAYLOR BROWN adding points. MSU closed out the first period with the final four markers, the last coming on a free-throw from junior KAYLA BUSH with seven seconds left.

Stevens opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, and a layup by Danielle Cornetta with 6:48 left in the frame gave the Ducks a 21-20 advantage. The Red Hawks answered back with the final 15 points of the quarter, with Brown knocking out a trey with 25 seconds left in the half to send the team into halftime with a 35-21 lead.

McKinnon had 12 points and seven rebounds in the opening half, as the Red Hawks forced 10 first-half turnovers.

The rally continued into the second half, as Montclair poured in the first eight points before an Emily Nunez three-pointer stopped the run. The Red Hawk limited Stevens to just six points in the third quarter, outscoring the Ducks 18-6 during the period. The Ducks trimmed the deficit down in the final quarter, closing the game out with six of the last eight points.

McKinnon notched her second double-double of the season, adding 10 rebounds to her 16 points. Carter was 7-of-11 from the field, while Bush hauled in 12 rebounds while adding eight points. Eight of her 12 boards were on the offensive glass. Christina Li matched McKinnon and Brown with a game-high 16 points, with Nunez chipping in 11 points off the bench.

The Red Hawks resume New Jersey Athletic Conference play Wednesday, heading to Newark to battle Rutgers University-Newark at 6 p.m. Montclair has won the last 17 matchups between the two schools, including a pair of single-digit affairs last season.
