Bethlehem, PA – The Montclair State men's basketball team got 18 points from AKBAR HOFFMAN and a double-double by IRVING CALLENDER IV, however, it could not help the Red Hawks in a 101-87 loss to Ithaca College in the Steel Club Classic at Moravian College on Sunday.
Callender had 12 points and 10 rebounds while JALEN PARHAM totaled 17 as MSU (7-5) dropped its third consecutive contest. Riley Thompson led all players with 36 points for Ithaca, which had four players reach double figures in the game.
MSU held small leads early and were up 26-25 with 10:22 left after Hoffman scored on a layup. The Bombers scored the next seven, five by Thompson to take the lead and moved in front 40-33 as Sebastian Alderete sank a jumper. Senior guard NATE NAHIRNY connected from behind the arc, pulling MSU within four points. But Ithaca embarked on an 11-2 run taking a 51-38 advantage with 2:17 on a Thompson three-pointer.
Ithaca led 57-43 at the half after shooting 55 percent (22-of-40) from the field over the first 20 minutes. They would end the game 42-of-80 overall (53 percent) while holding Montclair State to 42 percent (31-of-74)
Nahirny, Emedoh, and JUSTIN PORTER all had eight points apiece for the Red Hawks. Junior JOSEPH RADI came off the bench to add nine points along with five rebounds.
Montclair will look to snap its losing streak on Wednesday, January 8, when it goes back into NJAC play. The Red Hawks, currently 5-0 in the league, head to the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ, for an 8:00 pm matchup with Rutgers-Newark.
