Women's Soccer Bows Out of NCAA Tournament

Montclair, NJ (11/13/04) – Messiah College advanced to the third round of the 2004 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament today by defeating host Montclair State University today in penalty kicks, 3-2, following a scoreless tie through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field.

Messiah (18-0-2), which enjoyed a first-round NCAA bye after wining the Commonwealth Conference championship, advances to the third round next week against the winner of tonight's Gettysburg-College of New Jersey match.

Montclair State (11-7-4), which earned an NCAA berth for the first time ever after winning the 2004 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship, had advanced with a first-round win over Bay Path (MA) and went 6-0-3 in its final nine outings after a 5-7-1 start.

Messiah outshot Montclair, 22-6, in regulation/overtime, including 12-3 in the second half, and also held a 12-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Grose finished with three saves for the Falcons for her 14th shutout of the season, while sophomore netminder Kristen Kuhmann had seven stops in collecting her 10th shutout this fall. She finished the year by not allowing a regulation goal in MSU's last four games, a span of 310 minutes, and allowed just one goal in her last seven outings dating back to Oct. 16.

In penalty kicks, Grosse and Kuhmann exchanged saves on both team's first attempts, before sophomore Cali Pitchel (Gilbert, AZ) and juniors Sarah Hibshman (Lebanon, PA) and Hannah Levesque (Bowdoin, ME) converted for the Falcons, offsetting scores by MSU junior Kelly Dutko (Hamilton, NJ) and sophomore Dara Nalven (Old Bridge, NJ). Montclair sophomore Justine Barbato (East Brunswick, NJ) hit the cross bar with kicks tied at two, with Levesque then scoring the decisive goal.
