Montclair, NJ – New Jersey City University used a 15-6 run over the final 6:24 to knock off the Montclair State men's basketball team 90-85 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Wednesday.
The Red Hawks (9-12, 7-7 NJAC) were led by 17 points from
JALEN PARHAM. NJCU (11-10, 8-6 NJAC) received a game-high 23 points from Sam Toney to even out the season series at one game apiece.
After the Gothic Knights the first five points, Montclair embarked on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a pair of threes from senior
JOSEPH RADI. The visitors regained a brief two-point lead before
AKBAR HOFFMAN drilled a deep three off a feed from senior
NATE NAHIRNY. Midway through the frame, both sides were able to hit from the floor, as three minutes elapsed between made attempts.
Toney knocked down a jumper with 6:17 left in the period before sophomore
STEVE BREEMAN canned a three to bring the lead back to four. Montclair would use a 12-0 spurt near the end of the frame to take a double-digit advantage, but jumpers by Jahmere Calhoun and Denzel Banks cut into the hosts' lead right before the halftime. MSU would take an eight-point edge into the halftime break.
DEAIREUS BROWN hit a three 2:03 into the second stanza to send the lead back to nine at 52-43 before right straight NJCU tallies chipped that advantage nearly in half. An
EDDIE EMEDOH layup at the 10:27 mark widened the Red Hawk margin to seven and a layup by
JUSTIN PORTER made score 79-73 in favor of MSU with 6:39 to go.
Toney gave the Gothic Knights their first lead since 23-22 when he hit a back-breaking with 4:00 minutes on the clock, which kick-started a 7-0 rally. Brown tossed down a dunk after a Red Hawk miss with 16 seconds left to trim the deficit to three, but MSU was unable to get a steal on the inbound. Calhoun would seal the game with a dunk the other way to establish the final margin.
Parham added five rebounds to go with his 17 points, while Brown recorded 12 points and six boards off the bench. Porter tallied eight points and a team-best four steals. Calhoun and Banks combined for 35 points for NJCU.
Montclair returns to the road on Saturday, taking on Rowan University at 3 pm. The Red Hawks edged Rowan 89-84 in their previous matchup, Hoffman leading MSU with 19 points.
