Red Hawks Improve to 8-0 on the Season

Clermont, FL – The Montclair State softball team notched a 13-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson College before knocking off Ursinus College 10-4 Wednesday.

Montclair (8-0) wasted no time in putting up the first run. With one out, senior ELENA RADESICH reached on a fielder's choice and brought in on a double down the left-field line by sophomore KAYLA GALLO. The Presidents answered back in the second, as Brooke Lapia delivered a solo home run to lead off the frame.

The Red Hawk bats came alive in the second, rallying for seven runs. KATIE DEBELL and ALEXIS LAW laced one-out singles before junior AMBER POWERS brought both home with a single to center. Senior BLAKE SAPERSTEIN was up next and reached on an infield single to plate Powers. Gallo singled, and senior VALENTINA CUCCI walked to load bases, and rookie JENNA MELUSO knocked double to left to score Radesich and Gallo. AMBER REED capped off the scoring with a two-run single to center.

Staked to the big lead, rookie JILLIAN SIMS escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the third without surrendering a run. MSU padded their lead in the home half of the third, as Powers hit a two-run home run to left-center. Montclair finished off the scoring in the fourth, scoring three times with two down. Freshman EMILY MACIOLEK had the lone RBI in the frame, notching an RBI single to left-center. KAYLA VOLANTE allowed two baserunners in the fifth but got the final out she needed with a groundout to short.

The Red Hawks exploded for five tallies in the top of the first inning against Ursinus. With one out, Radesich singled in Powers, who had led off the game with an error. Cucci delivered an RBI knock to left before ALEXA PENNA drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 3-0. Law came up with the bases loaded and dropped in a single to right to cap off first inning scoring.

Ursinus got two runs back in the first before Powers notched an RBI single in the top of the third to extend the Montclair lead. Senior KIARA RUIZ ran into trouble in the bottom of third, loading bases on two hits and a hit by pitch. The senior hurler got out of the jam, inducing a pair of pop-ups to retire the side. Saperstein collected an RBI in the fourth, bringing home Gallo who led off with a double to center field.

The Bears dug into the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Amanda Ladzi delivered a two-out double to center. Montclair tacked on two runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to finish up the scoring. The Red Hawks needed just one hit in the sixth, as Reed tallied an RBI groundout before DALIAH LEGENSKI scampered home on a wild pitch. Saperstein drove in the final tally for her second run-scoring hit of the game. Junior KAYLA VOLANTE set down the side in order in the seventh to earn her first save of the year.

Law went 4-for-6 over the two games, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Powers reached base six times, collecting four hits and two walks while Saperstein went 3-for-5 in the nightcap. In the circle, Sims and Ruiz earned wins, combining for 10 strikeouts.
