Stevens Knocks off Men's Lacrosse in Intra-State Battle, 12-8

Ducks Pull Away Late; Dancsecs, McCreery Three Goals Each

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore Michael Burns, senior Brendan Monteleone, and junior Ryan Gebhardt each tallied three goals as Stevens won the intra-state battle with Montclair State, 12-8 at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Junior midfielder Shawn Coulter added a goal and two assists as the Ducks (4-2) posted their fifth straight victory over the Red Hawks. Stevens upped its record to 24-18 in the all-time series. Junior midfielder Ryan Capilis recorded a goal and assist.

Sophomore midfielders MATT DANCSECS and TYLER MCCREERY scored three goals apiece for MSU (4-2), which suffered its second consecutive loss. Junior goalkeeper MATTHEW MCLAREN stopped 17 shots for Montclair.

Tied at 2-2 late in the opening quarter, STEVE PRINCE gave MSU the lead with 2:15 to play notching his second of the season. It was the start of a three-goal run that carried into the second as McCreery and Dancsecs each connected for a 5-2 advantage with 5:31 to play before halftime.

The Ducks were able to trim the lead back to a goal before the break. Monteleone fed Burns for a goal with two minutes left, and Coulter's first a minute later got the visitors within 5-4.

Burns tied the game 26 seconds into the new half, and Gebhardt's first tally with 10:15 remaining gave Stevens its first lead, 6-5. Dancsecs tied the game less than a minute later, however, Gebhardt regained the lead for Stevens with his second as the Ducks led 7-6 heading into the fourth.

Montclair took advantage of a late third-quarter penalty and turned that into a McCreery man-up goal eight seconds into the fourth knotting the game at 7-7. Stevens broke the game open with a five-goal spurt over eight minutes to take control. Sean Kunz got the ball rolling with Gebhardt's man-up tally pushing the lead to 9-7 with 10:37 to go.

Monteleone registered twice in 56 seconds for a four-goal advantage before Caplis finished off the run with 4:25 left.

SKYLER FRANCISCO accounted for the final Red Hawks goal, a man-up tally.

Connor Green stopped five shots earning the win for Stevens. Jack Braswell had five in the first half. Daniel Crotty (5 ground balls) and Bubba Brennan (4 ground balls) each forced a pair of turnovers. TYLER BALL led Montclair State with four caused turnovers and five ground balls. TIM KIRN forced three turnovers.

The Red Hawks are scheduled to be in action on Wednesday, March 18, on the road in Allentown, PA. Montclair takes on Muhlenberg College at 6:00 pm.
